Rockwell is one of the top used b PLC brands in industrial automation. Rockwell Automation has a wide range of products from small PLCs to large IoT modules. The Rockwell brand is preferred for its robust hardware architecture and easy programming software. The popular PLCs with large I/O capability are CompactLogix and ControlLogix. In this post, we will see the difference between CompactLogix and ControlLogix PLC brands.

ControlLogix vs CompactLogix

The CompactLogix is defined under Rockwell as a small control system and the ControlLogix is defined as a large control system. This means that the IO handling, memory, and other software features of ControlLogix are far more developed for large control systems than CompactLogix PLC.

PLC model numbers

A] CompactLogix 5370 – starts with the 1769 series

B] CompactLogix 5380 – starts with the 5069 series

C] CompactLogix 5480 – starts with the 5069 series

D] ControlLogix 5570 – starts with the 1756 series

E] ControlLogix 5580 – starts with the 1756 series

Memory Capacity

ControlLogix has a maximum memory capacity of 40MB. CompactLogix has a maximum memory capacity of 20MB.

Number Of Embedded Ethernet ports

ControlLogix has a maximum of two embedded Ethernet ports. CompactLogix has a maximum of three embedded Ethernet ports.

Redundancy

ControlLogix has redundancy capabilities in them, which are not present in CompactLogix PLC. So, if any system requires redundancy in it, then it must use ControlLogix PLC.

Display System

ControlLogix has a display system that provides data regarding diagnostics and troubleshooting. If you are using CompactLogix PLC, you can only troubleshoot via LED’s on it. So, the diagnostic viewing capability of ControlLogix is very good and enhanced.

Communication Protocols Supported

ControlLogix supports Ethernet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Remote I/O, SyncLink, and USB; whereas CompactLogix supports EthernetI/P, USB, and DeviceNet.

Sercos Motion Support

ControlLogix PLC supports the Sercos motion communication standard, which is widely used in machine automation projects. This feature is not supported in CompactLogix PLC.

I/O Points Support

ControlLogix PLC supports a maximum of 128000 digital and 4000 analog IOs, which is far ahead of CompactLogix PLC.

Integrated Displayport

CompactLogix PLC has an integrated display port that can connect to industrial monitors with high definition. This feature is not available in ControlLogix PLC.

Conclusion

There is not much of a difference between both the PLCs. As ControlLogix PLC is a large-system PLC, it obviously has more advantages than CompactLogix in terms of capacity. But, both the PLCs also have many similar features which makes both these products very suitable for harsh, critical, and big industrial environments.
