Fasteners and General Corrosion of Electrical Motors

Problem

Motor vicinity situated start/stop push button housings, their cover screws, motors steel sheet fans and fan covers and fasteners in general corroded away in the plant highly unscrewing the hydroscopic, corrosive dusty environs.

In addition, corrosion-frozen stubborn fasteners drill out and tapping new threads extended even simple few minutes jobs into several hours.

The frustrated workman broke lamps glass domes to replace fused electric bulbs. All these reduced plant availabilities.

Author Solution

The following eliminated the entire problems:

1. Use threads greased slotted hex head screwdriver SS screws only up to 6-mm dia, threads grease smear prevents body threads corrosion, hence grease ing SS fasteners also
2. To save costs retain larger dia steel fasteners, but never forget greasing
3. Install all field push-button stations inside self-closing FRP boxes. Ribbed instead of plain sheet boxes are rigid and last longer
4. Provide lean-to-roof over dusty area situated outdoor transformers
5. Replace end of life street light poles with concrete poles
